Pollen coats the top of the water at the reservoir

I recently embarked on one of my favorite local hikes: the Sturgis City Dams, a serene and picturesque spot nestled in the Black Hills. Starting at the trailhead on Deadman Trail along Vanocker Canyon Road, the hike offered an abundance of natural beauty, wildlife, and even some delicious surprises along the way. Here’s an account of the hike, along with tips and directions for fellow adventurers interested in exploring this hidden gem.

Starting the Journey: Deadman Pass Trailhead

The hike begins at the Deadman Pass Trailhead, located 2.6 miles south of Belle Joli Winery on Vanocker Canyon Road. You’ll need to turn left onto a USFS road and drive a short distance to the parking area. This trailhead is easy to find, with clear signage and ample parking. Before setting off, make sure you have plenty of water, snacks, and a map or GPS device, as cell service can be spotty in some areas of the Black Hills.

Directions to Deadman Trailhead:

  1. From Sturgis, head south on Vanocker Canyon Road.

  2. Drive 2.6 miles past Belle Joli Winery.

  3. Turn left onto a USFS road and continue a short distance to the parking area.

  4. Park your vehicle in the designated parking area and get ready to start your adventure.

The Hike: A Journey Through Nature

The trail starts with a moderate ascent, winding through a dense forest of ponderosa pines and aspens. The well-maintained path is easy to follow, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels. As you make your way along the trail, you’ll be greeted by the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves, creating a peaceful ambiance.

Discovering Wild Raspberries and Strawberries

Wild Strawberries along the side of the trail

One of the highlights of the hike was stumbling upon patches of wild raspberries and strawberries. These sweet, juicy berries were a delightful treat, adding a touch of magic to our journey. If you’re hiking during the summer months, keep an eye out for these delicious gems. Just remember to forage responsibly, taking only what you need and leaving plenty for wildlife and other hikers to enjoy.

Wildlife and Scenic Views

The Deadman Trail offers plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. During our hike, we saw pods on some of the foliage with young caterpillars crawling out of them. The trail also provides stunning views of the surrounding Black Hills, with several scenic overlooks perfect for photo opportunities.

Reaching the Sturgis City Dams

After hiking approximately 2.07 miles over the ridge and down to the dams, we arrived at our destination. The Sturgis City Dams are nestled in a lush, green area, offering a tranquil spot for relaxation and recreation. The dams are stocked with Rainbow Trout by the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, making it a great spot for fishing enthusiasts. However, remember that a valid SD fishing license is required, and you must abide by all fishing regulations.

Tips for a Successful Hike

  1. Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially during the hot summer months. There are no water sources along the trail until you reach the dams.

  2. Wear Proper Footwear: The trail is well-maintained, but sturdy hiking boots or shoes are recommended for comfort and stability.

  3. Pack Snacks: Bring snacks or a picnic to enjoy at the dams. Fresh fruit, nuts, and energy bars are great options for a quick energy boost.

  4. Carry a Map: While the trail is well-marked, carrying a map or GPS device is always a good idea, especially in areas with limited cell service.

  5. Watch for Wildlife: Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, but remember to observe from a distance and not disturb the animals.

  6. Pack Out What You Pack In: There are no trash cans or facilities at the dams, so be sure to carry out all your trash.

  7. Respect Private Property: The area around the dams is bordered by federal land and private property. Respect all posted signs and do not trespass on private property.

The Uphill Return

Be prepared for an uphill hike back to the parking area. The return journey is challenging but rewarding, offering different perspectives of the beautiful scenery and another chance to spot wildlife or forage for berries.
